We are Phoebe and Annette Stephens, the designers and founders of Anndra Neen. All our lives, we have been surrounded by art and by artists. Design is in our lineage. Anndra Neen is the manifestation of our unique sensibility, a means of both honoring our creative legacy and evolving it by producing jewelry and accessories we consider modern heirlooms. We believe in the totemic power of objects that are lovingly made and passed down over generations.
Our influences are manifold. Among them, none is more important than our grandmother, Annette Nancarrow. She was an artist and a jewelry designer in Mexico City, and her pieces were collected by Frida Kahlo, Anaïs Nin, and Peggy Guggenheim, as well as many other famously stylish women. Our work synthesizes references ranging from bauhaus graphics and Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetics to antique European jewelry and the ancient metal-smithing techniques of Mexico, the country where we were born and raised.
Every Anndra Neen piece is unique and handcrafted out of mixed metals and silver by artisans in our workshop in Mexico City. We travel there every two months to oversee production and design, and work very closely with the artisans as they bring our sketches to three-dimensional life. We are looking for a return to the kind of luxury that is enduring and personal. we want to sense the hand of the artisan in every piece. When a woman wears Anndra Neen, we want her to feel that it was made especially for her. Before founding Anndra Neen, Phoebe studied literature at Wheaton college in Massachusetts and worked as a fashion specialist for Phillips de Pury. Annette studied acting at Boston University and moved to New York to pursue a career in theater. These varied influences and experiences shape our brand’s distinctive point of view. Anndra Neen is our medium for storytelling—and our true calling. With the objects we create, we narrate a tale about where we come from, the people we love, and the things that have made us see our world afresh. we wear these stories every day.
